Ebbing Tides
Where exploration meets education
Sarah Pope was born and raised in Virginia Beach. She grew up in Chic’s Beach playing in the Chesapeake Bay and developed a love for marine science. She graduated from Bayside High School in 2000. While in college, she worked at D & M Seafood Market and restaurant. Here she learned all about local seafood.
In 2010, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Science from Old Dominion University. She attended graduate school at the Collage of William and Mary, with a focus of study in secondary science education. Her intern experiences include NASA Langley and the Virginia Aquarium. She has a collegiate teaching license for the state of Virginia.
Sarah taught Earth Science and AP Environmental Science for six years at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, VA. Her students were recognized by Elizabeth River Project for their outstanding work growing oysters and marsh grasses in the classroom.
In 2015, Ebbing Tides Eco Tours, LLC was established while Sarah was on the Local TV show, “I Got This!” The show followed Sarah as she took the necessary steps to open her dream business and ‘get people off their phones and back in nature!’ The following summer, SUP Camp was born! SUP Camp has evolved into one of the best kid summer experiences in Hampton Roads!
Since 2016, Sarah has taught outdoor science classes on the beach for the Hampton Roads Homeschooling community. Her most popular class is Marine Biology on the Beach, where students learn about the ocean while hanging on the beach.
In 2018, Sarah began teaching online marine biology classes for Open Tent Academy, where students get an active hands on approach to online learning, with weekly labs and simulations. Her online classes have expanded to include other subjects such as oceanography, forensic science, astronomy, meteorology, geology, paleontology, and zoology.
The afterschool program, Ocean Life Club, started in Spring 2019 at Jon B. Dey Elementary School in Virginia Beach. The club has since spread to over five local public and private schools and caters to k-5 grade students. Each week the club offers animal encounters, dissections and crafts.
Sarah earned her SUP level 1-2 instructor training from the American Canoe Association in 2015.
Sarah has Lifeguard, First aid, & CPR Certifications from the Red Cross since 2016.
